1. From the National Director

Dear Praying Friend,

“Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.” Isaiah 40:1 NIV

As you meditate on God’s Word this Christmas and remember the birth of Jesus our Saviour, I pray that you will receive strength, encouragement and comfort. Also, as you read the following reports, please pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ, who in countries all over the world, place God’s Word and train faithful disci

2. Philippines—God’s Word comforts super typhoon survivors Typhoon Utor, which lashed central and eastern Philippines on Sunday 10 December 2006, killed 5 people and forced more than 90,000 people to flee to evacuation centres, officials say. Wind speeds of over 150km/h uprooted power lines and left at least five provinces without electricity, reports BBC news. Torrential rain caused severe flooding and several mudslides.

Bible League workers in the Philippines were in the process of providing for the spiritual needs of many survivors after last month’s devastating Typhoon Durian.

“Churches and some humanitarian organisations are involved in relief distribution and doing spiritual work among those who were affected,” says Bible League's National Director of Ministry for the Philippines.

To undergird this relief aid, Bible League sent 2,000 Bible study booklets and 2,000 Tagalog-language New Testaments to evacuation sites around the slopes of the Mount Mayon, an active volcano, southeast of Manila. Here strong winds and torrential rain from Typhoon Durian dislodged mud and boulders, buried entire villages, killed 526 people and injured 1,000. More than 500 people are still missing.

Typhoon Utor was the fifth major typhoon to hit the Philippines in the last three months. Thousands of survivors are now displaced, living in makeshift shelters, schools and churches. Livelihoods have been destroyed as entire fruit tree plantations and rice paddies were ruined.

“I believe it will take a long time for them to recover,” says Bible League's National Director in the Philippines. “They surely need our prayers!”

Action Plan

Pray for the safety of Bible League workers in the Philippines.
Pray that the Scriptures that are placed during the Bible studies will encourage those who have lost homes and livelihoods.

3. Worldwide—Bible League publishes 32 new translations

Members of 32 minority language groups worldwide received God’s Word in their own heart languages—many for the first time during 2006—thanks to a long-standing partnership between Bible League and Wycliffe Bible Translators.

“Some of those we are reaching have been exposed to the Gospel via a language they did not understand,” says Reverend Chester Schemper, Bible League’s Director of Minority Languages. “But many testify that it was after God spoke to them in their own language that they finally understood the message of salvation and really came to know Christ as their Saviour and Lord.”

The minority Scriptures published in 2006 by Bible League were translated by Wycliffe Bible Translators and used in countries with active Bible League ministry. Bible League provides Scriptures and Bible studies to local churches in more than 55 countries.

“Bible League and Wycliffe are partners in getting the Scriptures to those who have been cut off by a language barrier from what God wants all people to know,” Schemper says.

For more than 40 years, this collaboration has resulted in the provision of Scriptures in over 400 languages. According to Wycliffe, of the 6,809 known languages on earth, only 405 have translations of the Bible in its entirety. There are still 4,147 languages on earth without Scriptures, or 380 million people who don’t have access to God’s Word in their heart language. Currently, 1,410 language translations are in progress.

In 2006, Bible League provided newly-translated Scriptures to people in Colombia, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines and Sudan. These Scriptures were the end product of years of love and labour by the translators.

“Our ministry with unreached minority groups is like planting an apple tree,” Schemper says. “One has to wait longer for the fruit but the ultimate harvest is abundant.”

Action Plan

Praise God that with these new publications, more people will be able to read God’s Word in their heart language.
Pray that people’s hearts will change as they read God’s Word.
