Refugee finds eternal home

Zukiah sobbed as he told of the slaughter he witnessed—the death of his parents and brother. He was driven from his home by rebels fighting in the Congo. He remembers his struggle as he travelled one month, on foot, to reach the Nairobi refugee camps.

“I left Congo a very bitter man,” Zukiah says. “Although I believed that there was a God, I could not believe He was love.”

As a refugee, Zukiah stayed among other Congolese that had also managed to escape to Kenya. There he found safety in the slums of north Nairobi. He also found an eternal home.

Zukiah had met a fellow refugee named Sefu. Sefu is a pastor and Bible League-trained worker who hosts a regular Bible study in the camp. Sefu has a passionate burden to reach his fellow countrymen for Christ. In 2005, Bible League trained 48,147 people to lead evangelism and discipleship Bible study groups across Africa.

Sefu invited Zukiah to learn about God by studying the Bible. At Zukiah's first meeting with the group, he felt the peace of God settle his heart. “I met other Congolese who had gone through similar experiences, some even worse than me,” he says. “I continued to attend the Bible study every week and began attending the Sunday service too. I became convicted that the Word of God is true and brings life—that God truly lives. These lessons on God's love, revealed the person of Jesus Christ and how He suffered that I may have eternal life. It revolutionised my understanding of who God is,” Zukiah adds. “The Bible study helped me understand the message of Christ’s saving love, so that I fully committed my life to Jesus as my personal Saviour and Lord.”

Zukiah still lives as a refugee but now has a peace that surpasses all understanding. “My heart and mind have been healed,” he says. “I love the Lord with a true love. My prayer is that God will use me to help many know the love of God as it has been revealed to me.”

According to BBC News, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports that the number of refugees worldwide has reached a 26-year low—8.4 million in 2005. Thankfully, more than 6 million refugees have returned to their country of origin since 2002. However, the number of people living in refugee-like conditions within their own countries has grown to 6.6 million, in places like Colombia, Sudan, Uganda and the Congo. As a result, the UNHCR's annual global count of uprooted people rose to 20.8 million in 2005. This compares with 19.5 million in 2004.
