I hated God for what I saw being done to my people

Zukiah sobbed as he told of the slaughter of his parents and brother that he witnessed and how he was driven from his home by rebels fighting in the Congo. He remembers his struggle on foot—surviving, thanks to good Samaritans and their charity—while traveling a month's time to reach the Nairobi refugee camps.

"I left Congo a very bitter man," Zukiah says. "Although I believed that there was a God, I could not believe He was love."

As a refugee in another country, Zukiah stayed among other Congolese that managed escape to Kenya and find safety in the slums just north of Nairobi. One fellow refugee he met, named Sefu, was a pastor and Bible League-trained worker that hosted a Bible study in the camp. Sefu had a passionate burden to reach his fellow countrymen for Christ. Sefu invited Zukiah to change his mind about God by learning from the Bible.

At Zukiah's first meeting with the group, he felt the peace of God settle his heart. "I met other Congolese who had gone through similar experiences or even worse," he says. "I continued to attend the Bible study every week and also began attending the Sunday service, too.

"I became convicted that the Word of God is true and brings life and that God truly lives. These lessons on God's love, revealed in the person of Jesus Christ and how He suffered that I may have eternal life, revolutionized my understanding of who God is," Zukiah adds.

"The Bible study helped me understand the message of Christ's saving love, so I fully committed my life to Jesus as my personal Savior and Lord."

Zukiah still lives as a refugee, but now has a peace that surpasses all understanding. "I am living a peaceful life," he says. "My heart and mind have been healed and I love the Lord with a true love. My prayer is that God will use me to help many know the love of God as it has been revealed to me."

God is working mightily through the Bible League's ministry in Africa. Please pray for the Gospel to spread throughout the country and that His Word will change men's hearts and bring peace to this devastated, war-torn land.
