The following article is an update from our friends at Barnabas Fund

The Right to Justice - Email update:

RTJ Campaign latest

In our third Campaign Update we focused on persecution of the Christian minority in Algeria. We highlighted the new regulations, passed in February 2006 and brought into effect in September 2006, that heavily regulate the practice of all non-Muslim faiths.

A great number of our supporters joined in the letter writing campaign on this topic. They received replies from their MPs, from the Prime Minister's Office in the UK, from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the UK and from the Algerian Embassy in London and Australia. We also succeeded in getting a question asked at the European Commission for Human Rights, and received a detailed response.

We have looked in detail at all of the correspondence received. We have noted a number of discrepancies, and identified some points that we can look to debate further with the Algerian government. We have drafted responses to many of the points raised, and written sample letters for the appropriate people.

There are a number of specific steps Barnabas Fund would like to see happen. These include:

• removing the requirement for all non-Muslim religious worship to take place in registered buildings, in public and at previously agreed times

• removing the criminal penalties attached to conducting or organising a non-Muslim religious worship session without prior approval

• removing the requirement for the existence and formation all non-Muslim religious associations to be approved by a government body

• removing completely Article 11, which specifies fines and prison sentences for anyone who undertakes acts ‘likely to shake the faith of a Muslim’. This undermines the commitment given in Article 2 of the regulations that different religions will be tolerated and respected, and also is at odds with the universal human right to freedom of expression

For the complete story, and for details of how you can help the persecuted Church in Algeria by contesting these new regulations, go to our website – www.righttojsutice.org.

Prayer point – Pray for the Algerian churches facing discrimination and persecution under this law, that they will not be deterred from bearing witness to their faith and that the Lord will keep them strong as they proclaim His message to non-believers.
